The 160/6040 models were 'hybrid' tractors, using the rear end of a French Renault tractor, the front axle of an AC D15, and a Perkins 3/152 Diesel engine.
The 5040 was not a 'hybrid' tractor, but a ready-built model, readily sourced from UTB's concurrent 445 tractor. A Gas version was not available, only a Diesel, and the Diesel engine was high compression 3 cylinder, 95MM bore, 110MM stroke unit, of 143 cubic inches displacement, with a maximum governed speed of 2400RPM. Tested at Nebraska under Test Number 1230 in October 1977, the 504040.05 PTO horsepower at 2400RPM. The single stick, 6 speed forward, 2 speed reverse, lockingdifferential transmission, along with a live PTO, controlled by a two stage clutch, made the 5040 a handy little tractor, well suited for utility work.
The entire sheet metal cladding of the Universal 445 tractor, complete with it's distinctive rounded flat top fenders, was utilized in the 5040, only swapping a 'family' appearing AC-designed 'blackout' fiberglass and steel mesh grille for the original stamped steel one of the UTB 445. Other than that, about the only notable appearance difference between the UTB 445 and the AC 5040 was the deletion of the distinctively European style, outboard, grille mounted, Siem headlight units of the 445, forthe decidedly more conservative, economical, fender-mounted 'tractor lights' of the 5040. An improvement over the UTB 445 and Long 445was the more modern and convenient dry-type air cleaner that Allis installed for the 5040. AC orange sheet metal, white wheels, and a brown chassis made the 5040look right at home next to it's larger North American counterparts in the late 1970's Allis Chalmers line up.
Equipped standard with power steering, hand and foot throttle, safety start switch, differential lock, two stage clutch, one double-actingremote valve, and full, three gage instrumentation and lighting, the 5040 was a deluxe tractor for the40 horsepower range. The 5040 was also available with a 'creeper' planetary underdrive unit, providing an extra 3 speeds forward, and one reverse, for a 9 speed forward, 3 speed reverse tractor, with a super-low 0.48MPH 1st gear at full-ratedengine speed. Optional equipment for the 5040 were a ROPS safety frame with seat belt, a canopy, front weight carrier, 75lb 'suitcase'front weights, and 125lb rear wheel weights. Standard wheel and tire equipment for the 5040 were 6.00x16 three rib front tires, and 13.6x28 rear tires. Power adjusting rear wheels weren't offered on the 5040. A 4 drive drive version of the 5040 wasn't officially offered, but the author has heard of at least one example of such, not being such a surprise, as the UTB 445, and the Long 445 were bothoffered in FWA (Front Wheel Assist) versions, these being quite popular.
For whatever reason, ending production in 1980, 6000 445's were imported to the US and Canada to become Allis Chalmers 5040's.
The front end of the 5050 had much the same layout as the front end of the 5040, differingonly in a 2700RPM rated speed, and 103MM bore--although apparently a few slipped in with 100MM bore engines, making them practically the same tractor aslater 5045 models--and a heavier duty, inverted 'U' section front axle for loader work, and longer spindles, as opposed to the5040's round tube style front axle with shorter spindles. Other components of the front axle were the same, such as the pivot pin, and the hubs and wheel bearings, keeping costs down. The AC 5050also incorporated a dry type air cleaner, easing maintenance.
Behind the 5050'S firewall, however, was a completely different transmission from it's sibling 5040. It's peppy 51.4 PTO horsepower (51.46 PTO HP as tested at Nebraska under test number 1240, in late April 1977) was conveyed through a 2 stick, dual range, 8 speed, partial synchromesh transmission, with an independant PTO with a ground speed selection. 8th to 7th, and 4th to 3rd gears were synchromeshed, allowing for easy downshifting. A differential lock gave better traction in tough going. Brakes were of the same design as the 5040 tractors, but with slightly wider drums and bands. Heavier, square cross section rear axle housings were provided on the 5050, allowing for structurally improved flat top fenders, which had a 45 degree slope on the front and back edges, slightly narrowerthan the 5040's wider, UTB-style, semi-rounded, flat top profile. This neccessitated a slightly different ROPS frame for the 5050, as well.
Instrumentation of the 5050 was slightly different than the 5040, in that the separate fuel and temperature gages of the 5040 were combined intoa dual, fuel/temp gage in the 5050. The 5040 and 5050 shared the same tachometer, however.
Standard wheel and tire equipment on the 5050 was 7.50x16 fronts, and 14.9x28 tires on Power Adjusted wheels on the rear. An Orchard (low profile)version of the 5050 was offered on 6.00x16 fronts and 13.6x28 non-power adjust rears, or extra-low profile 'donut' fronts, and 14.9x24 rears, also non-power adjust. The 5050 FWA version was offered on 8.3x24 fronts, and 14.9x30 non-power adjust rears. Options for the 5050 included a ROPS and canopy with a seat belt, and an underslung muffler for low clearance work, and a narrow, 48 inch rear wheel tread version for vineyards. A creeper drive 5050 was available, also, having 12 speeds forward, and 3 reverse.
The 5050 was discontinued in 1983 after a very successful run of 6500 tractors in all versions being produced.
Instrumentation on the 5045 was the same as the 5050, having a tachometer/hourmeter on the left, and a dual, temp/fuel gage on the right.Behind the distinctive AC fiberglass and steel mesh grille was again a dry type air filter, eliminating the monotonous daily routine of changing the oil in an oil bath air cleaner cup.
Wheel and tire equipment of the 5045 was 6.00x16 fronts and 13.6x28 non-power adjusted rears, although 14.9x28 Power Adjust rears were available as an option. As on the the 5050, the 5045 had a rectangular cross section, brown enamelled muffler, showing it's Fiat heritage, whereas the 5040 showed it's UTB origins* with a silver, oval-sectioned muffler, with a very apparent vertical seam. Also, whereas the 5040's muffler had the curved top section welded on, the 5045 & 5050 had their's clamped on.
*Long tractors, although built by UTB, often had round, Stanley mufflers installed (as in the case of the 445 pictured further up),in lieu of the more obviously-foreign UTB style.
The front axle of the 5045 was the same inverted 'U' style as the 5050, while the fenders and optional ROPS & canopy were also the same as the 5050.
Unlike the 5040 and 5050, being built only one year, the 5045 wasn't tested at the University of Nebraska, therefore the 5045 wasn't available for sale in that state.
After a run of only 499 excellent, fuel efficient, nimble, spunkylittle tractors, the 5045 was discontinued the same year it began production: 1981.
After this, Allis Chalmers turned to Toyosha of Japan for their utility and compact tractors, and, while excellent tractors, with an extremely enviable track record, the 5040, 5045, & 5050 joined the 160 and 6040 in the AC tractor history books.
